Mountain Muhabura is situated between Rwanda and Uganda borders, its also sometimes known as Muhavura, it stands 4127 meters above sea level, this extinct volcano is the third-highest of the famous Virunga volcanoes. It’s part of Gahinga national park in Uganda and volcanoes national park in Rwanda.

Mount Muhabura derives its name from a local Rufumbira word to mean  “guide” in Kinyarwanda it means “sentinel”. The first resting point while hiking the mountain is at 3,116 meters above sea level and the final summit 4,128 meters above sea level. The mountain hike takes about 6-7 hours depending on the climber’s fitness.

Mount Muhabura offers spectacular views of the beautiful crater and the vast plains on the slopes where gorillas dwell in, mount Muhabura is the steepest of the volcano rangers and also the second-highest in Rwanda. It’s in the east of the Virunga mountains.

In Uganda, mount Muhabura can be accessed from the capital city by traveling from Kampala through Kabale to Kisoro and from Rwandan tourists can fly into Kigali international airport and then connect to volcanoes national park by road.
